A spreadsheet nobody trusts
The workaround is a shared sheet: a colour-coded grid where owners are meant to mark the days they are away, and everyone else writes their name in an open cell. It drifts out of date the week it is made, one person ends up maintaining it, and most empty spots never make it into the grid at all.
